Many people go through their lives not knowing much about their family history. Often, they fall out of touch with family members, or senior family members pass away, and their extensive family knowledge is lost with them. It's a shame that more of us don't take the time to document our photographs, create genealogy charts, and research more about our family trees. If we did the work while our relatives were still alive, we would have that much more information that we could pass on to our next generations.

But alas, we often take these things for granted, and much of the time we lose the facts and information about our family's past. Old pictures remain nameless, family albums hold question marks instead of answers, and our parents don't know anyone beyond their first cousins on their mother's side.

Fortunately, most governments keep track of birth records, marriages, and deaths, and there are other databases that contain even more information on ancestry, through other public records, sailing registries, immigration forms, and other historical documents. But finding that information can be the real challenge.

Many websites are created by individuals, who seek out other family members through surnames and other commonalities, and with the Internet they are able to get in touch with many lost relatives. And even more still, there are ancestry and family genealogy websites that offer genealogy services that can help track down those missing pieces to your family puzzle.
